When the rain comes in from the South, the beacons wander closer to Brecon

Day 56

Posted August 31, 2011 at 3:52 pm

To quote Rolf, “Can you tell what it is yet?”

What you can see is the very early fermentation stage of Genesis 1:i. We’ve had a little taster and the balance seems to be right with fine hop characters showing through. Looking good so far but all the magic happens in the next few days…

Day 55

Posted August 30, 2011 at 1:54 pm

WOO-HOO!

2pm Tuesday August 30th …. it smells like a brewery!

Yes, we finally made it to the brewing stage. Here you see the secret recipe of Genesis1:i being carefully blended using intricate and time honoured techniques. Duncan chucks malt in from a height and Buster stirs the mix with a big paddle!

Then it goes into the copper…

Later it goes into the FV…

Then we start to get really thirsty while it ferments!

Day 54

Posted August 29, 2011 at 12:00 pm

Brewday 1.

The sun shone brightly (yes, even in Wales), the finest of ingredients were prepared, the team were keen to get to work…..but then we hit a minor problem which couldn’t be solved on a Bank Holiday Monday.

“DOH!”

So, we’re forced to go and enjoy a day off like the rest of ther country – but fear not dear reader, beer should brew tomorrow!

Day 51

Posted August 25, 2011 at 5:11 pm

Preparation continues for the Big Day of the First Brew. Here’s our gallant brewer showing off his prowess with a pressure washer (shame about the knees). To the left, by the way, is our previously errant hot liquor tank, now full of water and made hot by our very own Idris (fired by kerosene, not maidens).

Day 49

Posted August 23, 2011 at 4:38 pm

A day of welding…

The Hot Liquor tank is (hopefully!) now fixed – you can see the patch all around the bottom of the tank – not sure what happened to it, but lots of flaws and micro-cracks in the Steel – very strange – but now all covered up in Ralph’s cunning handiwork! Tomorrow it’ll go upright again and be filled and start heating ready for the first brew…

Day 45

Posted August 19, 2011 at 5:13 pm

Well, what an eventful day.

Good things: all our shiny new casks have been unpacked, numbered and registered on our (equally shiny new) computer system. Not so good things: both the hot liquor tank and Duncan sprang a leak but it’s nothing that a competent welder can’t fix (!).

Anyway, here are the shiny new casks looking like they have something in them (which sadly they don’t yet).

Day 43

Posted August 17, 2011 at 4:28 pm

OK boys and girls…shall we play a game? It’s called ‘Spot the Difference’. Just compare yesterday’s picture with today’s…..

Actually we have been busy but at this stage the work mainly involves the fiddly little bits like installing pumps (with swearing from Buster), varnishing the delivery van’s wooden load liner (more swearing from Simon) and getting to grips with Sage accounting (yet more swearing from Duncan).

All coming together well, though, and we hope that in a week’s time there’ll be the lovely aroma of beer around the place.

Day 42

Posted August 16, 2011 at 2:51 pm

Sorry for a lack of post yesterday – the rigours of the Brecon Jazz Weekend took their toll! However, as you can see, we’re very near completion with the crafty artisans doing a few final ‘tidy-up’ jobs.

Day 38

Posted August 12, 2011 at 4:10 pm

It’s a white van! And it’s new! And it’s ours! How can you fail to be as excited as we are?

Well, true, it’s only a plain, utilitarian work vehicle…but just wait until the artist gets hold of it!

Day 37

Posted August 10, 2011 at 3:07 pm

A momentous day! All the brewkit is indoors (and yes, it fits!).Now all Buster has do do in connect all the bits together. Here’s how it all went in…
